Grade 6 Math Quiz-Geometry on Friday, January 19th

Students have been working hard on our Geometry unit since before Christmas. We are having a quiz to review all of the information covered so far. I am looking for "understanding" of the big ideas in this quiz. The format will include definitions (either multiple choice or fill in the blank), short answer, multiple choice from EQAO, problem-solving questions where students will need to apply the big ideas to solve more complex problems.

Students will need to know:

• definitions
• angle-the amount of turn between the intersection and two rays (lines).
• polygon-a 2D (flat) shape with 3 or more straight sides. All polygons are closed figures with no openings.
• parallelogram-a 2D shape that has 2 pairs of parallel sides (Ex. square, rhombus, rectangle)
• line of symmetry-describes a mirror image, when one half of a shape or picture matches the other half exactly. The middle line that divides the two halves is called the line of symmetry.
• reflection-flip (think of line of symmetry)
• transformation-slide (it requires a direction such as left, right, up, down OR North, West, South, East) 
• rotate-turn (Ex. clockwise, counterclockwise, 90 degrees)
• tessellation-means covering a surface with a pattern of 2D shapes with no gaps or spaces. 
• benchmark angles (acute, obtuse, right, straight, and reflex).
• problem-solve to figure angle/degrees within an angle or shape.
• use the hands on a clock with a specific time to calculate angles and measure degrees (see class work in blue duotang).
• using maniulatives such as a dry erase marker and transparency, rotate (turn) around a point, translate (slide), and reflect (flip) a 2D figure on a coordinate grid (following directions OR providing directions). Think about all our practice activities on the learning carpet.
• label the X and Y axis on a coordinate grid along with points using (x,y).

I have encouraged students to bring their math workbook and notebooks home to study. We will continue to review what students need to know for the quiz on Friday. Grade 6 Saints Project

A letter went home last week regarding the Saints Project our grade 6s will be working on over the next month with the Religion and Language teachers. Students have a copy in their "Language" folder of all the information that is required along with recommended sites to gather information from. When they are researching and writing their biography on their saint, students are asked to write in 3rd person perspective.  This project works in conjunction with the church and preparation for confirmation.

On Thursday, February 8th, my grade 6 class will be dressing up as their saint of choice and doing a short oral presentation in the gym starting at 10am. For this presentation, students are asked to create short point-form notes on index cards that they can refer to while they present information on their saint. While presenting, the students will be taking on the character of their saint and refer to themselves in 1st person. The class will be set up around the gym and our guests will be able to walk around freely to listen to each saint. Families are welcome to attend this unique event.

Presentation in the Gym

• Research will be completed and information written in your own words, with supporting pictures, and placed in a Google Document or Google Presentation.

• Towards the end of January, you will print out your title, name, research / information written and pictures and glue them onto a bristol board to be displayed. (See model below)

• You will also make a copy of your research/information and rewrite it in the first person and place the information on Q-Cards to be memorized for the oral presentation, in the gym -

Welcome Back!

Happy 2018! It has been a busy week back at school with a visit from Fr.Tavis, a New Years liturgy, and even a snow day!

Field Trip
To start out the new year, permission slips for the Museum of History have been handed out to students in grades 1-6. The permission slips are due by Wednesday, January 24th so that we have all of the information organized for Monday, February 5th when we go to the Museum of History. Students need to bring a bagged lunch and dress appropriately for the weather. If your child did not get a permission slip, I have extra copies available upon request.

Special Performance
On Wednesday, January 17th, the Rag and Bone Puppet Company will be presenting the play "The Dolls' House" to the school at approximately 2:30pm. This will be an exciting experience for our school because our very own choir will be singing throughout the play.

'Twas the Last Week Before Christmas

I can't believe the last week of December is here! Here is a list of this week's events and activities. Junior Craft Morning-please wear old clothing. We will be using permanent paint and markers. I am looking for any volunteers who wouldn't mind supervising a craft table with my grade 6 class.

Wednesday

Grade 6 retreat to Divine infant has been CANCELLED. We will be rescheduling for sometime in January. We apologize for the short notice. Please send your child to school with a lunch on Wednesday and it will be classes as usual.

Junior Advent Liturgy for Week #4-Love at 10:00

PJ & Movie afternoon for Junior Students

iWalk Day Tomorrow

Wednesday, December 13th is iWalk Day! It is a day on which we encourage students to walk or wheel to school as part of our Active Transportation and healthy lifestyles goals for our school. All students who are able to walk, bike, roller blade, scooter, or wheel to school are encouraged to do so. If you can't walk or wheel the whole way, we invite you to Drive to 5! This is a concept in which students are encouraged to drive to a location close to school, and walk the remaining distance to school. We now only have 1 location for Wednesdays which is the Parking lot of Marcel Lalande Park, 2157 Northlands Drive

Grade 6 PJ Day

The grade 6 class has earned a reward for working so hard this year. We will be celebrating by having a PJ day. Please ensure your son/daughter is wearing a fresh pair of PJ's when they leave home in the morning.

Grade 4 Commercial Work Period
The grade 4 class has been working hard on their cereal box assignment. Tomorrow is supposed to be their last day to make their commercials. If they are working hard and a bit more time, I will happily provide them with extra time. If your child requires any special clothing or props, please ensure they bring them to school on Wednesday.

Grade 4 Geometry Quiz

The Grade 4s have been preparing for their quiz for the past few weeks. I feel they are more than ready to write tomorrow. I have made sure their red duotangs were sent home today so that they can review for tomorrow. I have included pics of some of our anchor charts as well as a strategt=y for answering problem-solving questions.

For the quiz, students will need to know:

• benchmark angles (90 degrees-right angle), straight line (180 degrees), acute (less than 90 degrees), and obtuse (greater than 90 degrees)
• identify a benchmark angle on a picture or real life example
• types of lines (Ex. perpendicular, parallel, intersecting, etc)
• identify all lines of symmetry on a 2D shape as well as draw the other half of a symmetrical object
• identify different quadrilaterals based on their characteristics (Ex. a quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel lines is a parallelogram OR a quadrilateral with 1 pair of parallel lines, 2 acute, and 2 obtuse angles is a trapezoid)
• Students should be able to identify different quadrilaterals based on their pictures
• compare polygon (2D shape with 3 sides) to a quadrilateral (2D shape with 4 sides)
• understand that there are different types of parallelograms (rhombus, rectangle, square)
